Skip At-Home Computer Repair

Running into a problem with your computer is almost a daily occurrence. If you’re computer
“illiterate” as many claim to be, then differentiating between an easily fixed problem and a
complex one can be almost impossible. Googling “What to do when…” can be helpful in
determining whether you need to make that phone call or if the problem is something that you
can fix yourself. Many find themselves expending time and money on a problem that could’ve
been solved with just the click of a button. Having the option of home computer repair is nice,
but try these few things first before you make call.

We find ourselves surrounded by technology in every direction we look. Technology is
wonderful, but not foolproof. Because we rely on technology everyday, when problems arise,
we want (and need) to fix them immediately. When my clients notice that their computers are
experiencing small glitches or are just slow, there are a few things I recommend…

Start basic

Hitting the “remind me tomorrow” button only works for so long. Make sure that your computer
is updated so that small bugs are being fixed regularly. Usually when you turn on your
computer, you’re doing so for a specific reason-because there’s something you need to do!
Updating is inconvenient and time-consuming, so it’s easy to put off. Applying automatic
updates, although annoying, is usually good as it will keep you from putting off the updates
over and over again. Software, web browsers, antivirus programs, and other applications all
need to be checked for updates. If you need help understanding and applying updates, your
computer consultant and/or technician should be more than happy to help you increase your
overall computer competency. Applying updates may or may not fix your current problem, but
is crucial for preventing future problems. Another basic step to take before calling your
computer repair guy is to restart your computer. This seems obvious, but its a step that so
many people forget! Restarting can surprisingly fix a lot of your computer’s issues.

Trim the Fat

Your operating system may be overloaded by the countless applications and programs you have running. Go ahead and check out task manager (or your computer’s version of it) to see what you have open and to close down what you don’t need. Take a little time to go through your applications and uninstall any that you no longer use. Also, get rid of browser extensions that may be bogging down your device. If you continue to see the “your device is low on storage” button pop up, then take a minute to pay attention to the warning. If your disk is overcrowded, then your computer will inevitably run into performance problems. Since your operating system will need to create files while the system is running, the more free space, the better.

Test the Connection

If you notice that your computer is slower than usual, your broadband connection may actually
be the culprit. It is easy to mistake a slow connection for a slow computer. If you notice that
your downloads are taking forever or your videos are always buffering, run a speed test.
Running a speed test on your network connection is simple and straightforward. It’s best to run
your speed test with a wired connection using an ethernet cord. Most find speedtest.net to be
the best site to test your internet connection through. All you need to do is type speedtest.net
into a search engine. Just make sure that AdobeFlash is installed and Javascript is turned on in
order to run the test. Begin the test and speedtest.net will work its magic. At the end of the
test, you’ll be able to see your network connection speed. If your connection is indeed the
problem, then its time to contact your provider.
